MEASURING INVESTMENT DECISION QUALITY

Financial markets are complex adaptive systems driven by the collective behavior of participants. While the industry rigorously tracks market outcomes (including stock prices, capital flows, volatility, and performance attribution) it has historically paid far less attention to the critical upstream factor: how investment professionals transform data, information, and knowledge into high-quality, evidence-based decisions.

This research project addresses that gap. Conducted in collaboration with leading European asset management firms and industry partners, Panthera provides one of the first systematic assessments of investment decision quality among professional market participants.Using a mixed-methods approach, the research combined a quantitative survey, in-depth expert interviews, and Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA).

The findings challenge conventional assumptions and highlight that superior decision quality is driven less by individual talent or mindset than by three foundational elements: robust technical infrastructure, shared decision standards, and effective team dynamics.
